St. Augustine has been drawing visitors for over 450 years, and it’s not hard to see why. The oldest city in the United States packs history, beaches, and genuinely great food into a walkable downtown that rewards wandering.
Here’s how to make the most of a weekend.
Day 1: History and the Historic District
Morning: Castillo de San Marcos
Start at the fort. Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental US, and it’s worth 90 minutes of your time. The coquina walls, the cannons, the view of Matanzas Bay — there’s nothing else like it in Florida. Get there early before the tour groups arrive.
Afternoon: St. George Street
Walk St. George Street from the City Gate south. It’s touristy in the best way — street performers, old buildings, ice cream shops, and enough history markers to keep you busy. Stop into the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse and Colonial Quarter if you have kids.
Dinner: The Floridian
Farm-to-table Florida cuisine on St. George Street. The fried green tomatoes and the grass-fed burger are both outstanding. Book ahead on weekends.
Day 2: Beach and Vilano
Morning: St. Augustine Beach
Anastasia State Park has some of the best undeveloped beach in Northeast Florida. Rent a kayak, walk the dunes, or just stake out a spot with an umbrella.
Afternoon: Vilano Beach
Cross back over the bridge and head north to Vilano. It’s quieter, less developed, and has a great little strip of restaurants right on the water.
Sunset: The Bridge of Lions
For the best sunset view in the city, walk to the middle of the Bridge of Lions as the light hits the Castillo and the bay. It’s one of those views that makes you understand why people keep coming back.
