Good news for dog owners planning a Florida vacation: Palm Coast and the Flagler Beach area are significantly more dog-friendly than most Florida coastal destinations. Between the uncrowded beaches, the extensive canal-side walking paths, and a growing number of pet-welcoming restaurants and shops, bringing your dog along doesn’t mean sacrificing your experience — it enhances it.
Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Palm Coast with your dog.
Dog-Friendly Beaches Near Palm Coast
Flagler Beach (South of the Pier)
Dogs are allowed on Flagler Beach on a leash before 9am and after 5pm. The stretch south of the pier tends to be quieter and is the most popular spot for dog walkers in the early morning hours. Dogs must be on a 6-foot leash at all times, and owners are required to clean up after their pets. The beach is wide enough that you can usually find a relatively private stretch even on busy days.
Beverly Beach (Public Access)
The public beach access at Beverly Beach, about 8 miles north of Flagler Beach, follows the same leash rules and tends to be less crowded. A good option if you want a quieter spot for your dog to run along the waterline in the early morning or evening.
Washington Oaks Riverfront Area
Dogs are allowed on the Matanzas River side of Washington Oaks Gardens State Park on leash (they’re not allowed in the formal garden areas, and check park rules about the ocean-side coquina formation area). The riverfront trails are beautiful and easy walking for dogs of all sizes.
Dog-Friendly Parks and Trails
Palm Coast Linear Park Trail System
This is the gem for local dog owners. Palm Coast has an extensive network of paved and crushed-shell trails running alongside the city’s canals — over 125 miles in total. The canal-side paths are flat, shaded in parts, and excellent for morning and evening walks. You’ll share the path with cyclists, joggers, and other dog walkers, and the canal views are genuinely beautiful. Dogs are required to be on leash.
Graham Swamp Conservation Area
A large preserved natural area west of Palm Coast with unpaved hiking trails through pine flatwoods and cypress wetlands. Dogs on leash are welcome. Great for longer hikes with a dog that needs real exercise.
Pellicer Creek Conservation Area
Located just north of Palm Coast near the Flagler/St. Johns county line, Pellicer Creek features a beautiful hiking trail through maritime hammock with views of the tidal creek and salt marsh. Excellent birding, and the trail is uncrowded most days.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants and Patios
Florida has generally permissive rules about dogs on restaurant patios, and Flagler Beach has several spots that genuinely welcome them:
- The Golden Lion Café — Large outdoor patio, dogs allowed and generally welcomed by staff.
- Funky Pelican — Beachside patio, relaxed about leashed dogs.
- Java Joint Coffee — A popular Palm Coast coffee shop with outdoor seating that’s dog-welcoming.
Always call ahead to confirm, as policies can change seasonally.
Tips for Visiting Palm Coast with a Dog
- Bring water — Saltwater won’t cut it, and Florida heat can be intense from June through September. Carry a collapsible bowl and extra water, especially on beach days.
- Watch sand temperature — Beach sand in July and August can get hot enough to burn paw pads. Visit in the early morning or evening, or bring dog booties for midday outings.
- Keep an eye on the wildlife — Northeast Florida trails and waterways have alligators, particularly in freshwater areas. Keep dogs on a short leash near canals and ponds.
- Leash rules are enforced — Even on dog-friendly beaches, off-leash dogs can result in fines in Flagler County. The designated leash-free areas are limited, so plan accordingly.
