Florida has a complicated relationship with dogs on beaches. Many of the most popular beaches are off-limits to dogs entirely, or restricted to early morning and evening hours. But Northeast Florida is different — and if you’re planning a trip with your dog, this part of the coast is worth knowing about.
Flagler Beach: Dog-Friendly Year-Round
Flagler Beach is the most dog-friendly stretch of coast in the region. Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round, on leash. The city has dog waste stations throughout the beach access points. The beach is wide, the crowds are manageable, and the vibe is genuinely relaxed. This is the easiest call on the list.
Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area
Just south of Flagler Beach, Gamble Rogers allows leashed pets in the campground and picnic areas but not on the beach itself. It’s worth knowing if you’re camping, but beach-time with your dog means sticking to the city beach.
Vilano Beach
Dogs are allowed on Vilano Beach on leash. It’s less crowded than St. Augustine Beach and has a nice flat stretch that’s easy walking. Parking is easy and free. A solid option if you’re staying in St. Augustine proper.
Palm Coast’s Waterfront Parks
Not a beach, but worth mentioning — Palm Coast has an excellent network of linear parks along the Intracoastal and canal system that are dog-friendly and great for morning walks. Linear Park in particular runs for miles with good footing and shade.
What to Know Before You Go
Leash rules are enforced at all Northeast Florida beaches. Most require a 6-foot leash maximum. Clean-up is required everywhere and waste bags are provided at most access points. During sea turtle nesting season (May–October), some beach access rules may be modified — check local signage when you arrive.
